K , I see two views by two different types of folks.
View #1: This system sucks. Its not fair and just. America is a great country and land of immigrants and we chose to immigrate here. Lets work on this issue so that I myself and folks such as myself now and going forward do not have this problem. I will do what ever it takes. I personally feel that regardless of the outcome, it gives immense self satisfaction to commit to meaningful cause. Others might not feel so, but all of us believe that this problem needs to be solved and do what ever we can do.

Now My question is what do you want to accomplish on IV if you do not want to work on the issue, If you do not want believe in the core principles of this organization. If you think that immigrants are treated like dirt and again if you believe in that and because you are an immigrant in this country, you should have been putting up with a treatment like dirt, do you have an iota of self esteem?? Seriously, If you really believe what you are saying why do you even want to be here now? or why do you even want to have a backup plan that will again make you a immigrant some where else?? $$$ over ride self esteem Huh? I compared the president to show that immigrants and sons of immigrants can have a life that is quite opposite of what the OP said. Just because you or some one you know treated some one bad does not mean that every one treats others the same. Should I say that all of you those who bought homes and are having a life bought a home with 0% down and interest only loan so that you can save your taxes now and if your GC does not come through in 5 years, you will walk out with out any loss as you made hefty deductions and haven't paid single penny towards the mortgage and simply go to Timbuktu or Krakovia. I will not!. Just because you chose to buy a home and have a life does not mean that others dont. Every one lives their own lives. Those who dont buy a home live a life of their choice. Stop judging people. GC was not a risk or hindrance to you in buying a home but could be for Joe the Analyst. You might have deep pockets, Joe the analyst might not or have other commitments. Coupled with the lack of GC, his risk might be more than some one else.

Since this discussion has been going on for 5 pages, i thought ill add my 2c.
Firstoff i haven't gone through all 5 pages so if someone already mentioned this, please don't jump on me. You can create an SBI account called SWIFT account. They will give you an account number and a SWIFT code for the bank.
You can then initiate a wire transfer from any bank in the US. They charge a flat rate of around 35-45$. The good part is, you can have the money sent in $ to your local account. They say it takes 3 days but it never takes more than one day for me.
The money is saved in FD as dollars and earns you interest if you leave it for 11 months. If you need to convert it any time, you have to forgo the interest (as with any FD) and you can get the closing exchange rate of the previous day.
This has many advantages
1) one simple fee of 35$
2) In case you want to bring back the money to the us, since it is kept as dollars, you can transfer it back without any hassle. (To keep it in dollars , you may have to provide this as a special instruction)
3) Folks back home have control on exchange rate, they can cash it any time it is high
4) Takes less than a day in most cases.
If you do the math, you will see that this is better than icici when you are sending 4000$ or more approx. icici does not take fees upfront but they always give you almost 50p less than exchange rate.
I have used this 4 times so far and its very reliable.

When you call the law makers and tell them you support XYZ bill.. my question is what do you get out of it!
When the lawmaker realizes that he is getting 10000 calls from LEGAL aliens,
>who are not from his constituency,
>who can’t vote and
>who can’t contribute to his election campaign…
what is the motivation for the law maker to support the bill…
So to avoid sounding stupid and foolish and desperate when you call… a more logical approach would be to :
a) Generate a public petition form on IV website and have all the members’ login and sign the forms digitally…
b) Then have IV reps.. fax them and send them to lobby groups ….
c) Lawmakers will listen to one talking head…and not worry abt 1000 calls that borders on ..”saar …support the bill saar”..
How many of you have actually talked to the lawmakers? Its always the assistant!
But instead .. someone says we have a signed petition of 25000 members effected by immigration mess …. And it’s a hi tech workers lobby group ..every lawmaker will talk to you and not the assistant!
Conclusion: calling the lawmakers haphazardly is actually hurting IV cause..to a certain extent!

If he is calling ICE...only the employees are going to get affected. As the employer is already on GC or USC, he will be slapped with fine. Nothing else. So the best option is DOL and not the ICE.

If you feel you are offended or prejudiced, why not pursue a lawsuit for defamation/moral damages? I think this is perfectly fit for a judge to decide. Only this way the small can affect the big.
Or, why not try to appear on the show and talk against the lies Tancredo said? I bet Lou Dobbs would love that, as it would increase audience.
A petition like this, directly to CNN, is, in my point of view, a waste of time and effort. It's not going to be read and will be thrown into the trash can as soon as it is opened there.
Defamation is hard to prove without Lou Dobbs having singled out a particular individual or company. Lou Dobbs is hiding behind the first ammendment and he obviously knows that. However if someone is harmed, profiled or attacked because of being a H1-B holder and the perpetrator was influenced by Lou Dobbs there could be a case for recovery of damages. Lou Dobbs has been burned before by guests who have argued against his rhetoric, incase you have noticed, majority of his guests are almost 100% in full agreement with his principles thus hopes on appearing on his show are minimal at best.
Petitions and letters to CNN if delivered through the appropriate mode eg fedex will be read. If CNN decides to ignore the letter then they can only blame themselves when advertisers are the next target. No company would want to be associated with the sponsorship of bigotry or hatred.

Thanks ilikekilo, I'll check out IMG. Even with the rider for pre-existing condition, the coverage is limited to $15000 max, so I decided it isn't worth paying the extra premium for such little coverage.

IV is already not member friendly. With 25,000 members, raising 30,000 is getting so difficult. Why so? I once posed the question and moderators conveniently deleted it.
We collected 30,000 in eight days. I would not call that so difficult...

I think there is something wrong in lobbying of pro immigrants. Anti immigrants Convinced many Congressmen with facts and numbers that H1b wages are less than US workers. Pro immigrants should have collected accurate information about wages to counter their claims.

I realize that there is no point in telling you guys anything. When you don't have an open mind, you can not accept the facts. It's like banging your heads against steel wall. If you have an older priority date (EB-2 or EB-3) such as 2004 or earlier, it would most likely be a waste of your time and money to file your adjustment now.
In any case, the initial filing would be outwardly denied and no immediate benefit would come of it. .
My lawer says the same thing too.. Also he says the other possibility is that USCIS keep aside these apps and these may end up getting transfered service center to service center like the old LC apps. not very sure how much he it make sense though

c) The bank which waived Wire Fee (suppose BOA ) sometimes convert $$ to Foreign currency right here at US,there by drastically reducing the Exchange Rate (once again they are private banks - we can't dictate their exchange rates)
I joked with the BOA manager when he was trying to rip me off that way and asked him frankly whats the workaround - he told me to do a domestic USD wire to SBI-NY and instruct them to carry USD all the way to Foreign country (via International Wire) and then convert using SBI-India exchange rate which is fantastic.
Who will do all that or lose money? These are the days for ONLINE-ACH man - Free transfer by mouse !
